Sailing through adversity: The Aristotle Onassis lesson on mindset

Alright, imagine this: it’s post-World War II and everyone’s complaining about what to do with the countless ships out of a purpose now that the war ended. Countries are scratching their heads trying to figure out how to get rid of these massive metal beasts. Some even thought it was a good idea to turn the Pacific into a ship graveyard, in fact, right now there are more than 3,800 ships sunk across the Pacific, I had the opportunity to dive in one of these just outside Melbourne, Australia while working on the cruiseship pictured above.

But getting back to the topic at hand, today we are discussing the one man who saw the opportunity that would revolutionize maritime transportation. Aristotle Onassis, the enigmatic greek, later, shipping magnate emerged with a mindset that not only defied convention, but revolutionized maritime transportation.

While others contemplated the logistics nightmare of repurposing or recycling of these decommissioned ships, Onassis saw a golden opportunity just by shifting his perspective in saying “We don’t have enough ships to transport everything that can be transported from continent to continent” thus finding a way to connect continents, bridge nations and transform the way goods were transported across the seas. His out-of-the-box mindset turned adversity into advantage, showcasing the power of entrepreneurial thinking in the face of challenges.

Onassis refused to accept the prevailing narrative of scarcity, instead he realized the world needed better connections, not fewer ships. And just like that, he changed the game. Imagine the audacity: turning a surplus problem into a solution that transformed global transportation both for goods and people. His mindset wasn’t about scarcity – it was all about abundance, turning what seemed like a huge challenge into a golden opportunity.

So, what’s the lesson for us entrepreneurs?

When things get tough, let’s not just sit there complaining. Let’s see the hidden opportunities in the challenges we face. And we can do this by thinking differently about the issue and explore new and different ways to solve it looking at it from a different angle and being bold enough to try them. He did it and it reshaped the future.

Being open to changing how we see things, shifting our perspective and trying out new approaches is like having a superpower in business: imagine if you always did things the same way – you’d probably get stuck, right?

Remember the saying “S*** in, s*** out?” I find it very fitting here, it’s not just about solving problems; it’s about looking at problems in a whole new light and coming up with fresh ideas.

In our fast-paced world where industries are always changing and evolving, those who are willing to shake things up and think outside the box often end up leading the pack. So, for us entrepreneurs, being adaptable and open to new possibilities isn’t just a smart move, it’s the key to staying ahead and making a lasting impact.

So, in a world full of limits let’s dare to dream big, let’s find opportunities in every roadblock and, in the process, redefine the industries we are active in and what success really means for each of us.
