How do we build Discipline?

In the grand scheme of things, discipline plays the lead role, conducting our actions, words, and thoughts. And it transforms mundane moments into opportunities for self-development especially considering that, with each decision, we decide our journey: did we decide to give in to the first desire, the first impulse or did we decide to maintain our momentum, did we decide that even if we don’t “feel like doing” something we will rise above it and make it happen following the planned day, the planned to-do list, the planned plan?

Discipline is also not an occasional act but a constant companion, present in every single choice we make. Whether it’s rising with the sun, tackling a challenging task or saying no to distractions.

So what is a good method to incorporate discipline into our lives?

  1. Morning: Commence your day with a moment of reflection. Contemplate your goals, challenges, and the day ahead. This mindful start establishes a disciplined rhythm. Personaly I am not a morning person at all, however, through discipline I wake up very early and ensure I go to the gym. There are many other activities that can be the start of your day: reading, catching up on the news, playing with your pet, meditate, put in a load of laundry, anything that can be repeated daily and that will give you your first shot of DOSE (dopamine, oxytocin, serononin or endorphine) and your brain will consider them as the first completed task making the new tasks ahead as something we want to do. I call these anchors. For example, if I become ill, not going to the gym that day becomes disapointing especially since I have been going to the gym daily for the past over 6 years and I must replace it with someting else.
  2. During the day: Before each decision, take a brief pause, reflect on whether your choice harmonizes with your long-term goals. Discipline thrives when guided by clear goals. There is nothing quite like knowing where you are going. I have met meny people wondering why something didn’t happen and sometimes the answer is very clear. They gave up on pursuing that specific goal. Or they left it up to chance and outside of their control. Will this work always? No, but it significantly increases your chances to get to where you want to get to if you know the needed steps.
  3. Evening: Conclude your day with a reflective review. Which actions showcased discipline, and where can you fine-tune? This nightly habit fosters continuous improvement and ensures that all actions align with our objectives, goals, values and contribute to the succes of our long-term goals.Remember, adversity is needed in order to tests our discipline. Resilience, and consistency allows us to navigate challenges with grace and maintain the momentum on this journey called life.

In the realm of self-development, discipline is not a strict regimen but a dynamic force. Embrace the daily discipline of decision-making, allowing it to guide you toward personal growth. It’s the key that unlocks the door to a better version of yourself, action by action.

Embark on this journey, where all actions and desire for self-development converge, and let discipline be the force that propels you towards your success.
